Chinese traders in the 8th Century sought out the pristine Palawan archipelago as a source of fine pearls and spices. Centuries later, Spain was on its quest for the New World, and Ferdinand Magellan commenced his expedition to the Spice Islands.

The Philippines (named after Spain’s King Philip II) became a key trade outpost for New Spain, allowing Conquistadores and their galleons to transport fine pearls, cloves and cinnamon (worth more than gold) on the Manila Galleon eastwards to Mexico, and then back to Spain.

This European trade and dominance left an indelible colonial print on the archipelago unique in Asia and readily seen today in the historical, religion, names, cuisine and language.

As our 21st century began, the founders of this private island community, conceived of an antidote to the less respectful developments currently appearing in many pristine destinations around the world.
