Since joining the EU Bulgaria’s Health Standards have improved dramatically and they now conform with EU regulations.

When you travel to Bulgaria you will be required to have valid health insurance. While the medical facilities are very good, it is handy to have health insurance that covers repatriation in the case of an unforeseen medical emergency. Facilities in local hospitals are basic and old fashioned and specialised treatment facilities are not completely westernised. Medical insurance, with provision for emergency evacuation, is therefore a very good idea.

No vaccinations are required for travellers to Bulgaria from EU counties to enter the country. Water is drinkable although many people opt to buy bottle water which is inexpensive and widely available.
