The UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi, is a 150 mile long canal in Languedoc-Roussillon connecting the Mediterranean and Atlantic seas. The canal runs from Toulouse to the Mediterranean port of Sète. Engineered by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century, the canal is ‘one of the modern era’s extraordinary achievements” allowing easy access between the seas. The Canal du Midi has become a popular tourist destination in its own right due to the beauty of the waterways and surrounding countryside.
